Meet Sherrilyn
Sherrilyn Jahrig is a talented music teacher and performer with a wealth of experience in many genres. Growing up in Vancouver BC, she completed her Royal Conservatory of Music piano studies with well-known teachers Edward J Parker, Keiko Kimura Parker, Marshall Sumner, Robert Rogers (UBC) and Lyell Gustin (Saskatoon), receiving medals, scholarships and awards.
After moving to Edmonton AB, Sherrilyn studied flute (Gr X RCM) with flautist Dorothy Speers and played with the senior flute ensemble.
While raising three children, Sherrilyn furthered her professional musicianship as Piano Collaborator for Alberta Ballet School, Ballet North and local dance studios.
Sherrilyn taught music for Alberta College for many years and also assisted in developing the Early Childhood Music program. Her private piano lessons have enriched the musical training of hundreds of students.
After graduating with distinction in Arts & Cultural Management (MacEwan University) Sherrilyn stepped into the world of directing multidisciplinary productions and festivals. This inclusion of theatre, storytelling, poetry, dance and visual arts carries over into her piano teaching with innovative student concerts. As part of their studies with her, students have written and participated in musical projects and plays: ‘Music Through a Renaissance Window’ (2017), ‘Musicalanimalia’ (2015), ‘An Impressionist Garden’ (2010), ‘pianOlympics’ and historical vignettes with musical significance. Beloved songs and tales of many cultures have also been enjoyed while studying their elements.
Sherrilyn’s energetic career includes a lot of great gigs. One favorite afternoon was spent playing 'ragtime' on an old upright piano - in a raft race! Floating down the North Saskatchewan River from Devon to Edmonton, she was glad to play from the complete works of Scott Joplin…with only a few splashes!
