Lessons for Children
Sherrilyn teaches young learners to play skillfully and to take pride in expressing themselves. The piano is a great instrument for demonstrating the musical language, all laid out thoughtfully in black and white, with an instantly gratifying pitch and tone at the first press of a key! It is all fun and games, but with carefully selected songs and exercises to accomplish levels and grades. Through the use of stories and themes appealing to children, especially nature, Sherrilyn ensures technique, theory and artistry are equally emphasized.
Methods and Goals
Drawing from the vocal-based *Kodály method alongside the best progressive music-reading books for each child, students learn how to correctly match pitch, read rhythm, identify meter, improvise in keys and modes, and write down their music. Sherrilyn is a trained Early Childhood Music teacher and program developer, so soon has each child decoding the mysteries of music and playing fluently.
Progress is measured regularly with comprehensive musicianship benchmarks and optional RCM exams. For older children especially, Sherrilyn knows the importance of ‘bonding’ with one’s music and patiently helps each student to choose repertoire they will treasure. Children do work harder knowing they will perform for an audience of peers or parents. Well-planned group lessons and lively concerts are enjoyed frequently, greatly helping all children to feel comfortable performing.
*Created from the Hungarian (Zoltán) Kodaly method using voice, piano and percussion. It matches the natural musical development of children all over the world.
