Lessons for Teens
Piano studies through the teen years demand a different approach for each student. Sherrilyn makes sure to spend plenty of lesson time with each young person, playing and choosing the best music and offering links for home listening. Sherrilyn helps teens find ways to ensure quality practice time.
Methods and Goals
Sherrilyn thoroughly prepares students for Royal Conservatory of Music examinations on request. The RCM continues to be increasingly inclusive of student and teachers changing needs. Basic requirements are Technique, Theory, History, Sight Reading, Ear Training, Musicianship, Artistry and Performance.
Exams are not required for the ‘Music…Naturally for Teens’ program, although a progression through the graded repertoire is still encouraged. Sherrilyn teaches a lively program designed for individual tastes and musical goals. The student emerges as a confident and skilled musician, well-equipped for a musical career or future enjoyment of music.
Sherrilyn loves to find and cultivate diverse musical interests for each student, knowing a bond with a song is top priority for wanting to play it over and over again!
Some options are classical, jazz, improvisation, playing by ear, historical time periods, favorite singers/composers, or dance and instrumental styles from cultures around the world.
Private Lessons
-Piano lessons are weekly for 45-55 minutes
-Flute and separate theory lessons are 45 minutes
-College or university students may have one 60-minute lesson every two weeks if desired
Group Lessons
-Group lessons are optional and are 75 minutes
-They offer camaraderie, the sharing of musical knowledge and finessing of performance techniques. Creative group projects can include theatre, ensemble and accompaniment with singers and instrumentals, visual art and writing.
